Smooth Sailing: How to Choose Your First RC Boat

Whether using it just for fun or participating in competitive racing leagues, RC boats are one of the most popular toys among hobbyists.  They are also useful for exploring areas that might be hard for humans to reach, like flooded waterways. However, in the variety of radio-controlled boats and catamarans on offer, it is easy for a first-time captain to get confused.

First things first, invest in an easy-to-control and easy-to-maintain remote control jet boat to bring loads of loads of fun and excitement to your water adventures. Typically, it includes a transmitter, also known as a remote control, that is coupled with a receiver inside the toy. The receiver receives wireless radio frequency signals from the remote control. The movement of the vehicle is managed by these signals. Now, that you have learned the way an RC jetboat operates, it’s time to focus on some additional buying factors that will help you make an informed decision.

Electric Motor

The RC jet boats share a lot of external similarities. You can see the difference when you glance in.

A remote-controlled jet boat with a brushed collector system will allow you to travel at a speed of between 20 and 30 km/h. If you choose to have a brushed motor on board, be aware that it is not long-lasting and does not perform well with lithium-polymer batteries. The brushed motor alternative may cost less, but after two or three water rides, you’ll become tired of it.

On the other hand, if your budget allows it, pay attention to brushless jet boats. You will get a speed of 40-60 MPH (70-100 km/h). Besides that, durability, power and the use of modern LIPO batteries are some of the properties and the main reasons why more and more hobbyists are choosing them over the brushed option. And, even if you’re a beginner, worry not as they are suitable for newbies as well. Even though these options cost more, keep in mind that sometimes it’s better to invest a little more money and spend on a worthwhile product.

Furthermore, if you are a novice and choose to go for the brushed boat option, then it’s better to lay your hands on a catamaran. Although steadier, a catamaran’s turning radius is greater than that of a monoboat. For this reason, mono is a better choice if you intend to race and have a full-off because it is more manoeuvrable. But, on the other hand, there is a significant rollover risk. Additionally, a catamaran is safer to ride since it is harder to tip over.

Maintenance

When buying an RC boat think in the long term. All remote-controlled jet boats for sale need routine maintenance. At the absolute least, the shaft has to be lubricated. Generally speaking, look for a radio-controlled boat with a roomy, easily maintained central compartment housing the major electronics. To conveniently modify or remove the necessary portion, you can reach in with both hands. To keep any water out, there should also be a seal of some form around the entire edge.

Some boats have very small compartments that make it exceedingly difficult to access anything, in addition to having little batteries. Therefore, you’ll be limited to a specific battery size, which isn’t always a good thing.

Spare Parts

It’s important to consider whether or not replacement parts are available for the RC boat you’re about to get before making any selection. A bench model is not a radio-controlled boat. It will race, it will have collisions, and certain pieces will break. The rudder, propeller, and shaft can all be damaged if you run into something hard. If the kit doesn’t include with the extra parts, you’ll need to buy them separately.

Stabilization

RC boats come with an auto-stabilization system. There are two types. Ones with floodable chambers and ones with rotating propellers. Boats with floodable chambers have an empty compartment on one side of it. The compartment fills with water as soon as the boat is flipped over, returning it to its upright posture.

In boats with rotating propellers, in an attempt to get the boat “on its feet,” the propeller alternatively rotates in many directions if it has fallen belly-up. Alternatively, boats with auto-turnover are an equally valuable option. They swim back to their starting point on their own, so there’s no need to follow them. That is, you don’t have to be terrified of cold water when sailing in any kind of weather.

Level of Completion

RC boats are available in several levels of completion. Oftentimes, novices purchase boats without reading the descriptions, leaving them unsure of what to do with it

Numerous radio-controlled boats and catamarans are available in PNP (Plug-and-Play) models, meaning they don’t require any additional batteries, chargers, controllers, or receivers. Although operating the ship requires your gear, this option is far less expensive.

Ready-to-Race (RTR) or Almost-Ready-to-Race (ARR) boats, on the other hand, are prepared for sailing “straight out of the box.” It includes everything you require. The battery, charger, and control system will indeed be inexpensive, but that’s important to know for a beginning. The RC jet boat kit version is rare and only suitable for experienced hobbyists.
